What's Been Going On
We try to record the things that happen around Church of the Cove with photos and videos, then every now and then share those with you -- just a little reminder of what God has done in and through His people.

One Response to TrafficJam2011
Jim Steele heard about TrafficJam2011 and decided he could do something to help bring child sex trafficking to a grinding halt.
The plan is for each person walking ten miles, receiving $1 per mile from ten people. Jim wasn't content with doing that.
He chose instead to walk from Townsend to Maryville.
On a Monday.
Just one member, taking up the challenge and going a step beyond.

Communion
Today is the day we call "Good Friday" -- that day when Jesus hung on the cross for the sins of all mankind, showing his love for every person.
We celebrated that day, that sacrifice, tonight with a special observance of communion (or the Lord's Supper.)
That week, Jesus had entered Jerusalem, prayed over it, cleared the Temple and faced both praise and ridicule from the people he came to save. On that Thursday, He and His followers gathered in a very special upstairs room that they borrowed and celebrated the Passover. As He shared that they were to continually celebrate this same ordinance and in doing to to remember Him.
This night, at Church of the Cove, we gathered in a darkened worship center, illuminated by candles.
There were a few chairs for those who would not be able to stand, but those who attended were asked to be uncomfortable as we recalled all that our Savior suffered on that Friday so long ago.
Preparation
We were asked to spend a few moments in preparation for receiving communion, examining our lives. Each person attending then walked up the aisle between the candles to one of two tables to break off a piece of the bread and lift it to heaven, confessing all sins to God, seeking forgiveness for this.
What a beautiful sight as a couple walked forward, the wife approaching the table as the husband stood back. As her hand lifted the piece of bread to the Lord, his arms were raised in worship and prayer. Sisters, students, single adults and entire families walked to the end of that aisle as each person took that time to prepare for their own personal communion, and then returned to the back of the worship center.
Bread and Wine
Next, each person walked forward to take a piece of that broken-off bread from a basket. Those holding the baskets spoke a word to each person -- helping to seal the thought in each mind that the Lord's body was broken because of His great love for them. Next the attendee walked to one of five people lined up along the altar. Each of these held a goblet filled with grape juice.
As the attendee approached, that one holding the goblet asked the question, "How may I pray specifically for you right now?" and then prayed for that stated need. When the prayer finished, the person dipped the bread into the juice as they heard the phrase, "the blood of Christ, shed for you."
Worship
It's not the norm for the way we observe communion/the Lord's Supper. Then again, is there such a thing as a "norm"? May it never become something so mundane that we consider any part of it normal! As tonight's service concluded, the praise team led in a song by Travis Cottrell, "Jesus is the Lord." (Click the link to listen to Travis Cottrell's team.)
Jesus is worthy of all worship, all praise, all honor and all thanks. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He is the Lord. Our prayer is that this day, this moment, you recognize the immense love God has for you -- that love being the very reason there is a "Good Friday" and accept Christ as your own Savior and Lord. If you'd like more information about that, please contact us.

Team Sports
What are you doing on Monday and Thursday nights for the next several weeks? If you have to stop and think about the answer to that or if your answer is some television show, let us suggest something else to you.
Softball.
That's right! Our softball team is up and running (pardon the pun) again and could use your support. Each game will be played at the Pole Climbers Field 6 at the corner of North Rankin Road and Joule Street (across from Walgreens) in Alcoa. Times will vary. Check the church calendar to find the time. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, a cooler and some snacks and make an evening of it!

Men & Boys
Saturday, April 2nd was a day of work and fun and food for the men of Church of the Cove. In the morning, several of the men gathered to help Marvin & Sandy Burnette get moved into their new home in Walland and in the afternoon, the guys gathered for some friendly competition -- there were even prizes!
The evening was rounded out with a delicious dinner of fried catfish,
French fries and hush puppies and great discussion.
Stay tuned... the men's ministries are on a roll!

Crossville Mission Trip - February
Last Saturday, February 26th found over 25 folks headed to Crossville Mission Bible Training Center to share some love.
The trailer was filled to capacity with a sofa, some chairs, a parsons bench and some clothes -- along with our portable sound system, the grill and food for the lunch.
The shelves of the bus were layered with items for the pantry (and some of Doreen's cookies!). The church was challenged to try to fill the Center's pantry to overflow and you responded with passion! Thank you!
The praise team shared "Power in the Blood" and two other songs, then Becky Coleman and Rhonda Wigington each shared a word of encouragement about being in storms, but knowing God is right there with you -- to stand strong. Then, Darren Wigington stood up to share a word with the residents from his experience.
Help to Others, Maximum Glory to God
"The storm you're in is so that you can bring help to others and maximum glory to God."
He shared about trying to meet the expectations of people instead of resting in the knowledge of being where God wants you.
"When you run from God, you'll find hell."
Darren talked about sitting down after work one day without turning on the TV or having supper, then waking the next morning in that same place. His first thought was that there had to be something more.
"God's ready. The car is running. Get in the car."
Using an analogy of the chronically late family member, Darren shared how God is ready to move to that next step He has planned for you and all you have to do is get ready and get in the car with Him.
"When you're ready, God's ready."
After a response time when the Holy Spirit was evident, the residents of the center quickly transformed a worship center into a dining room while the Cove folks got the food line prepped.
The menu was the same as those who have attended one of the church Valentine's Day dinners have enjoyed: grilled marinated chicken, pesto bow-tie pasta, corn, green beans and desserts. When the residents were told that there was enough food for them to enjoy a second helping, there were very few who didn't take that opportunity.
One of the Cove folks was told by a resident, "This is the best meal we've had in over two months." This meal that we almost take for granted was reveled in as much as any holiday meal. Just one of the things that the Church of the Cove visits mean to the residents there.
Lives were changed -- some stayed at the center, some came home on the bus.

Caught in the Act
Some folks took ownership of a project and came on Thursday and Friday, since they would be unable to be there on Saturday. Many thanks to them!
Here's a glimpse of the folks we "caught" serving God by caring for His provision.
Cheryl Griffin making the windows shine! |
Chris Taylor clears the gutters. |
Teresa Charles made the leaves fly! |
Stephen Halcomb vogues while cleaning around the mobile units. |
Duane Charles workin' hard to clear leaves around the house. |
Lisa Abbott, Stephen Halcomb & Jack Bryant working hard to clean up behind the scenes. |
Tony Abbott putting some Paul Bunyan on low-hanging branches. |
Michelle Webb, Julien Choy & Roger Hall getting the flower beds looking great... wait... where's Doreen? She WAS here! |
...there's Doreen.. behind the wheelbarrow. No stopping her for a picture! |
Just like at home, the work isn't what you would call "done," but it's looking better. We'll soon have a list up of things that need to be done each week, each month and just occasionally. You'll have the opportunity to take on whichever item fits you!
